Kain believed he had seen a vision of a way to summon a source. He disappeared into the mountains and set up a camp for himself. He constructed several large pillars of irregular shape and unknown material, in a circle in a nondescript valley.
When the structure was complete, nothing happened.
Undeterred, Kain stayed in the hollow as months turned to years. One night, decades later, Kain woke to find a source had appeared in the centre of his structure. He quickly captured as much energy as he could into the magical artifacts he had, attempting to master the blend of magical energy flowing through what he deemed “his” source. The power restored his body but began to eat at his mind.
He believed that the source came to him; was part of him. This brought about his own destruction as he took in too much power and its destructive force consumed him completely. The source remains to this day; no conclusion was ever made about the truth of his prediction. No one has ever been able to determine how or why a source appears, and it is commonly believed that Kain's prediction was more circumstance than prophecy… though a ragged following of believers have moved into the area, experimenting with the dangerous blend of magic crackling in Kain's Hollow.

Sound doesn't travel far in the Stillwood. Entering the forest brings a soft, dreamlike near-silence to every action.

The giants of Ockridge are generally peaceful, and prefer not to be involved in the affairs of humans. With a much longer lifespan, they view humans as flighty and unpredictable; chasing source after source for both solutions to their problems, and for power. Many prefer to study the natural world and their lore is deep and ancient, spending much of their time tending to their gardens, forests, and mountains.
They are not magic users, and also have a natural immunity to magical aggression. Humans have few ways or reasons to harm the giants, and through the generations, have learned to more or less leave them alone.

Mons was a powerful sorcerer and brilliant engineer in the Age of Titans. The machine was built underground to harvest the energy from a powerful source, and use it to protect the city above. Unfortunately, the source diminished before the titans did; little remains of the city on the surface. The machine itself now lies dormant.
