====== Miscellaneous Lore ====== ===== Life Aboard La Oruga ===== Human society has finally stopped calling devices "cell phones" after they realized that "phone" usage is a very minimal portion of what the devices do. CommPads are used as personal terminals for accessing machines, as well as entertainment and communication. There are multiple manufacturers of CommPads, with varying goals and underlying technologies. They are mandated by the Directorate to all have, at a minimum, a commonly accessible port for interfacing with hardware, though most devices have other ports as well as a variety of wireless protocols. Wireless "shipnet" access is available throughout the ship - which is good for the common person but bad for keeping covert operations secret. A variety of animals that were deemed "safe" enough for the journey, were brought aboard to be pets and to help create a more active ecosystem. Dogs and cats are the most commonly owned pets, though still considered a luxury - not as commonplace as on Earth. English is the dominant language onboard, most founders have at least a basic understanding in addition to their native languages, and basic translation is available on CommPads. Most bathrooms are single-stall and accessible to all. Major public locations may have 21st century style bathrooms due to large crowd sizes. Gender identity and sexual orientation are largely non-issues after the first generation - both are understood and accepted, and cases of homophobia and transphobia are rare. Plant-based food is grown in the outer ring, as well as in greenhouses on the inner ring. These greenhouses provide locations people can go do for a dose of nature, akin to community gardens. Meat-based food is largely grown ("cultivated") in labs using scaffolding that meat cells literally grow onto. The equivalent of a steak takes about a week to grow.
